I was born in Westfalia, product of 1964. I live in some nice place in
Southern Germany. I am a writer, editor, painter, started music as
a selftaught guitar and bass guitar player.
In 1997 my rather passive and noise-guitar centered
interest in archetypes of stringed instruments found a new
object of desire, when Shivnath Mishra handed me my first
Sitar in Varanasi. For this act of confidence I am forever
thankful and owe him all kinds of respect.
I received valuable lessons, instruction and
orientation towards Imdadkhani Style from Rafat Khan (Mumbai)
and Subroto Roy Choudhury (Calcutta).
Insights into other styles and Gharanas came from
Daniel Bradley (Austria) and Mita Nag (Calcutta). Saibal Chatterjee
(Calcutta) gave me some basics of Tabla playing.
Current projects/bands are:
with Thomas Schmid (Tabla). light and classical and sometimes
electronic background, ambient ragaism, sometimes in cooperation with
Bharata Natyam dance group Rupakam
with Maiki Mai (Tabla), classical.
(A for Alap), me solo, never ending Alaps.
I am lucky I have found some great instruments over
the years, Sitars from Rikhi Ram, Hemen, Kanai Lal, Mohan Lal Sharma
and a gorgeous Surbahar from the last mentioned maker. Strings are
Besides playing Sitar and Surbahar I learned to
repair and maintain these instruments, can do open and closed Jawari
and everything that is needed for sound, recording etc.
